THE AXEMENS CARNIVAL.
another special attraction at lh«» Axemen's Carnival oil Ikixiny Day wilt Ik> the double-hamled sawing championship of Australasia in - tVot logs, for which 13 pairs of sawors have entered. Public interest will principally centre around Tcttitt Brothers, Volzke Bros., and Kelly and mate. I'ettitt Bros, established a record in Melbourne ten years ago, which has never liecu approached by nearer than 0 seconds at any other carnival in Australia. Volzke Bros., the Taranaki representatives, conjointly with Casey and Pretty, hold the world's record for this particular class of event. Although Volzke Bros.' record is •iiHih fanter than that established InI'ettitt Bros., it must be remembered that Australian wood is much harder than New Zealand white pine, so that it is impossible to compare the different times registered by the sawyers here and in Australia. Pettitt Bros, have never sawed together previously in the Dominion. It is not certain whether Kelly will saw with his old mate. Cowan, or with Dave Pretty. Kelly and Cowan have been Westland champion* for several years, and at the Exhibition Carnival, held in ChristchurVh last January, they easily won the New Zealand Championship. Should Kelly saw with Pretty be will also have an equally worthy mate, as the latter's record with Casey !•. too well known to need furth .T comment.
A special train will leave Xcw Plymouth at 9.30 on Boxing Day. arriving at Eltham at 11.50 a.m., affording patrons an opportunity of seeing this great contest.
