THE NEW HEBRIDES.
Per Press Association, uit c, ™ Auckland, Xliursdav. Ji.il.S. Challenger, winch arrived at Auckland to-day, conveyed the iiritisli Commissioner from Jj'iji to the New Hebrides, where he was welcomed bv the i'l'ench Commissioner. The proclamation of the joint control of England and t'rance was read ashore, and the llags of England and France unfurled. Salutes were tired by the French and British warships. x The British Commissioner said law and order would be established, and any luither attempts at tribal revolt would be put down with a firm hand, 'the British Resident was formallv appointed, and Captain Barrower, of the New Zealand Forces, was left in the Group to organise the police force.
