LAWN TENNIS.
A meeting of tiie oTurnanient Committee of the Taraaaki Lawn Tenuis. Association was held on Fiidty. Dr. .Lcaiham presided. A letter was received from the secretary of the New Zealand Association, Mr. G. N. (Johlie, strongly recommending that tile trophies lor the tournament should be bought by the Association. The practice of giving orders to wniners left room for abuse. It was decided to buy all trophies before the tournament and to give winners facilities for exchanging them. An amendment, aiming at preventing the exchange of trophies by having inscriptions placed on them -was defeated. .It was reported lhat -Mr. S. Smith had obtained guarantees against loss amounting to over I*so. Ife had imped to obtain more, but his canvass had been interrupted by illness.. Mr. W. C. Weston oflered io take up the work of obtaining guarantees, and his offer was accepted. Norman Urookes. the world's champion, cannot accept the invitation to attend the championship meeting.. As advertised elsewhere entries for the New Zealand championship events, to be held in New Plymouth during Christmas week, close on Wednesday, 18th inst. Tt is hoped that Taranaiii players will enter well, as, naturallv, great interest will be taken to see honour local players shape when pitted against good players from other parts. No doubt they will show up well in the handicap events, but it is in the championship events tliat local supporters would like to see them lo the fore.
