BOOKMAKERS' FEES. j Christchureh, Last Night. The Canterbury Jockey Club propose to levy the following bookmakers' fee's 1 for the Riccarton grandstand enclosure: Summer meeting £lO daily, autumn meeting £2O, Grand National meeting £2O, and Spring meeting £2O; one-half the above fees to be charged for the outside enclosure.
I TURF TOPICS. (By "Jloturoa.") It is reported that lten. Dceley, the Auckland jockey, has been offered the mount on no less than three candidates in the Auckland Cup—Akarana, Star Rose, and the veteran Paritutu.
A Wanganui press wire states that, out of over fifty applications for the position of caretaker of the course, the
Wanganui Racing Club have re-appoint-ed Mr. liyves Webb. New Zealand sports will l>e glad to hear that U Hewitt's luck in England, has taken a turn for the better. Mr «. Hall Walker, who heads the winniu« owners' list in England this vear. lias taken a fancy to his horsemanship, and has engaged him for next season. At Sandown Park on 24th October Hewitt won a two-year-old race on a 10 to 1 chance owned by Sir T. I!. Dewar. Mr. Hall Walker saw the race, and was highly pleased at hi* choice of a jockey for next season. Hewitt's new employer I owns several good young horses, and, benefiting by past experience, the New Zealander should do well in the Oln Country next year. In a letter to a Sydney friend Hewitt stated that Mr. Hall Walker was paying him £IOOO as a retaining fee.
Mr. Spencer (iollan, who at one time raced horses successfully in New Zealand, picked up the Duke of York Stakes, a handicap worth 2000 sovs and run over a mile and a-quarter, at Kempton Park (England), with a four-year-old filly, Tirara, by Bill of Portland— Tirallen'e. The sire of Tirara made a name for himself in Australia, being the "dad" of Bobadil and many other brilliant performers over there. The filly was ridden by the Australian jockey. F. Bullock, and was followed home by All Black and Dinneford. Noctuiform was the runners at the start, but at the finish had a place to himself—dead last. I
