CLIFTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Clifton County Council held its ordinary meeting at Waitara on Friday. There wore present Councillors J. H. Foreman (chairman), T. M'Ken/.ie, Wright, C. O'Sullivan. H. T. Joll, Bisheli. and Uaustad. THANKS. Mr. H. Wilkes wrote thanking the Council for his appointment as legal adviser to the Council. THE CLIFTON KOAD.
Mr. 11. Wells, of Pukearuhe, wrote asking the Council to expedite the deviation of the road at Pukearuhe. Labour was scarce, and an early start would be necessary in order to complete the work before winter. The Chairman said that the Council v;as not yet in a position to call ten-
uers. Councillor Joll moved that tenders ■hould be called. Matters appertaining '. ) the proposal should lie in order by i xt meeting. If not, no harm would i ' done. The Council was not compelled to accept any tender. Councillor Mackenzie seconded, and ',..• motion was carried. A RISE IN ROYALTY. Mr. James 11. Allan notified bis intention to charge sixpence per yard royalty un all ntohe taken from quarries on' his farm in the Tikorangi district, known us Sarten's farm. Tlie Chairnan thought a gravel pit n fairly profitable property at threepence a yard, but the Council should not take action just yet. He would try to arrange to see Mr. Allen on the matter.— Agreed to. LAND REYENTK. The Receiver of Land Revenue intimated that the sum of JL424 Os Ud, comprising portion of "thirdis" and "fourths," accrued to September, 1!107, on Crown lands under the administration of the Council. J.he grader commenced work in this riding ou -November M, and had so far completed the following works, the prices representing the average cost per chain:— Utaraoa road, U qhaiiis, ii) leet wide, 3s id, and 4!) chains of cutting, at Is id; Uutawa road, 45 chains, 2U ii-et wide, 3s 4d, and lo chains of cutting at Is Id. Ipun completion of this road, tlie grader would form up portions of the l'lta road. Casual labour wuld be employed at points where the grader was unable to work, and where stumps, etc., required to be removed, but those
items would be comparatively small. U. Pennington bad completed his metalling contract at l'uningi. It had been deemed advisable to reduce the thickness, and live chains bad thus been coated instead of four. Forming up the top cud of Junction road was proceeding. The. engineer requested authority to paint and tar the Makara and Taramouku bridges on the Otaraoa road, at an estimate dcost of JCltj.
Urenui Riding—Coleman had commeuced carting out his maintenance gravel, and about 3UO yards had been stripped. Several weak spots had showed up in the road, and he recptested authority to increase the output by yards for the main road. A good job on the Matapa road had been made by W'aite and Fuller.
Mokau Riding—Messrs. Tarry and Cartwright were prepared to proceed at. once with their metalling contract, but labour was scarce. The engineer recommended that the Council should concentrate its efforts upon the immediate completion of this contract, and allow the contractors to absorb any labour available. He found that the grade on the south fiide of the Uruti river could be improved at small cost. ('. Schmidt had full instructions to proceed with the sandstoning on the okau and Putiki roads. He had also erected a suspension bridge, giving him access across the Tongaporutu river, for which ••thirds" were allocated last voar The report was adopted, and ' the authorities granted as requested MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
Councillor Wright said he had some remarks concerning the fact that the grader wan now working in the >'"atiinaru Hiding, which had refused to he loaded with its share of the cost of the machine—L'uiicillor (Jauslad said that was under the previous personnel of the Council. When lie and Councillor Uisiiell were elected, they decided that the ruling should bear its share of the cost, and now it was Ngatimaru's turn to get some grading done. The Chairman's action in purchasing a van to accompany the grader, at a cost of £1«, was continued.
Upon the motion, of Messrs. Joll and Wright, the following loan applications were continued: Mangamaeho road, .CSil; (Japui road, ,U00; Clifton road, OOl).
Mr. Cartwright (Cartwright and Tarry J waited upon the Council with reference to the I'ruti road metalling contract. Arrangements were made to recommence the work next week.
Mr. K. Richards' tender for supplying and delivering about 300 yards of metal for Tikorangi, at u's per yard, was accepted.
Mr. Thomas Moody's application for some simdstoning in two cuttings on the Junction road was left in the engineer's hands. Mr. J. W. (Irieve wrote re an overflow from the Pukclio road nn his section.—Referred to Councillor Uishell. with power to act. The engineer was instructed to invite tenders for a earl-track deviation on the Otaraoa road, and to submit an estimate for a 10ft track.
He will also call tenders for further metalling on the Ohoke road as soon as the money is available.
Accounts amounting to C 433 12s llil were passed for payment.
