A large and representative crowd of people was present and speculation brisk. Per Press Association. Christehurch, Last Night. At the meeting of the Canterbury Methodist Synod to-day, the president, the Rev. 11. Dewsbury, in referring to the Gaming and Lotteries Act, said that there might be some admirable features in connection with it, but the perpetuation of the totalisator was a fatal blot. A still ghastlier blot was the licensing of bookmakers, and he hoped that the Methodist Church would express itself strongly regarding everything that tended to put its imprimatur on a vice that was legalised and respectable, a traffic which was in a large degree detestable.

BETTING CONTINUES. Per Press Association. Christehurch, Last Night. A representative of a local newspaper who set out to-uay to ascertain whether street betting was being carried on in Christehurch now, and, if so, to what extent, succeeded in making one bet with a bookmaker direct, and two others with agents of bookmakers. Two of the bets were made on the street, and the others in an hotel, and the investigator felt convinced- that he could have made many more bets had he continued his ipiest further. Some of the bookmakers approached said that they were i waiting for licenses and did not want to bet.

TUBF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Waitara races to-day. The first race starts at noon. The £2O fee should stop the bookmakers to-day. The club might be glad to get the metallicians next year. Uhlando put up an attractive performance when he won the Waverley Cup. He is engaged in the Waitara Cup-this afternoon. The name of that fast little horse Love Star has ibeen changed to Red Star, and he races under the latter name in the maiden plate to-day. He ran a good third to Billow and Te Kuiti in the Morton Memorial at Waverley. Trinket, who tops the list in the welter handicap, won a double at the Waihi meeting, where she showed great pace. Otaraon will be given a run in the Clifton Stakes. Tarina is considered a certain starter in the Sentry Hill Stakes. Pearlie is training on nicely, and Mooshcn is said to be in great heart. Mr. (i. (J. Stead's cast-off. Noetui-

form threatens not only to break a section of the British public, but also to ilo the sacm sad thing to friendships of years' standing (writes "Spearmint" in the "Weekly Despatch"). The trouble arises over his training. Thrwe who were the mediums of the horse's sale contend he has never been properly trained. This has caused Major Edwards to go off like fireworks. And really I think the major had cause. If | ever a horse was trained, that horse, was Xoctuiform at Xewbury, where he could havs won had he cared. He did not care. IF< did not care again on Wednesday in the Ooodwood Plate. What is the'matter with him 13 that b" i- a double-dyed welsher. Meanwhile. Hewitt has been shelved for Maher. and Maher can win Mr. Buchanan nothing. The whole enibroglio is a delightful comedy to the cynical onlooker.
