William Patrick Harrington, found guilty of receiving property stolen from the .Mutual Stores, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment; John Robertson, for failing to keep proper books, received one month's imprisonment as a first-class prisoner) Edward Many, for arson, 12 months' imprisonment. In the case of Smart, found guilty of the theft of £l4 from the State Fire Insurance Department, sentence was deferred. Smart, convicted of stealing State Fire funds, was sentenced to six months' hard labor. This completed the criminal sittings. Wellington, Saturday. In Pollock v. Beeson, an alleged defamatory libel ease, Mr. Justice Cooper, in summing up, said the jury had to consider whether regard should be paid to the moral character of persons employed in Government departments, especially where girls worked. There was no doubt from the evidence that Pollock had led a most immoral life; in fact, from letters he bad written, it was clear that he was a perfect satyr. Some general .remarks on the sins of society were made by Mr. Justice Cooper, who said there was a terrible state of immorality in the community, especially in this city. He was sometimes appalled by ihe amount of immorality shown in out cities. Wellington, Last Njgnt. Defendant in the Pollock v. Beeson criminal libel action was found guilty, and sentence was,deferred pending argument before the Court of Appeal. Bail was allowed.
