PROVINCIAL NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondents.) TARIKI.

A meeting of the Horticultural So- [ ciety, held iu the hall on the 20th inst, was fairly well attended, though considering the importance of the object and the fine evening, it is surprising that more were not present. .Mr Stratford, the chairman, call ujion Mr Therklcson (the secretary) to read the balancesheet, and a satisfactory financial position was disclosed, the society being more fortunate than some of its members in being able to boast of a substantial credit balance. Mr H. Trimble was nominated as president for the ensuing wur, and unanimously elected. A committee was set up to work for the annual show, which will be held on the

third Thursday in March. Mcsdaines Leuahau, Noble, Stratford, Eason, and Miss Trimble were elected a ladies' committee. The rules of the society were reviewed and a slight alteration made to one 0. them. Other business connected with the Society kept the meeting engaged I ill a late hour.

Many locul farmers were debarred from going to the llawera Show on Thursday through stress of work, the wi't spell in the spring having thrown tlicm behind. UHEXri. One of the most successful bazaars ever held in I'renui took place in the hall on Wednesday and Thursday last,

for the benefit of the town hall funds. Mr. G. Bertrand, chairman of the town hall trustees, opened the bazaar. He said that the object for which the bazaar was being held was a laudable one, namely, to reduce the debt on the hall. The ladies' committee—Mrs. F.

Howe (secretary). Mrs. Fuller, and Mrs. •I. H. Burke, and .1. Telfan—had work ed for the last three months. They weer deserving of all praise. . Mrs. F. Rowe, as secretary, was decidedly the right woman in the right place, and had worked like a Trojan, lie was pleased to see so many ladies present, and the best way to show their appreciation of the vast amount of work done was by purchasing plenty of the useful and nice articles the stalls were loaded with. He also had to thank all the ladies and variuus persons in L'renui, Xew Plymouth, aud also outside of Taranaki,

who had so kindly sent such a splendid lot of goods for the bazaar, lie had great pleasure in declaring the bazaar

open for business. The various stalls and decorations looked very nice. The soft-goods department was presided over by Mrs. F. Rowe and Mrs. Fuller. This stall was well loaded with ladies' and children's goods, and did a good trade. The fancy goods department looked very nice. It was presided over by Mrs. J. 11. Burke and Miss A. Willisson, and did well. The refreshment and lolly stall was under the direction of the Misses E. and

J. Fuller. It was very successful. The Christmas tree looked Al, and was loaded with toys of all sorts. The youngsters were simply delighted with the tree. It wan well looked after by Miss W. Rowe and Miss L. I'ascoe and Miss Hutehcson. A must amusing department was the fishing pond. It was managed by Miss E. l'ryott and Miss Reay and Miss Dumblcton. The refresh-

Butler, provided much amusement. There was also a whistling competition. This was won by Aliss S. Bertrand. It will be some time before we forget the bazaar at Ureimi, which, the committee tell jne, will net over £SO for the town hall fuuds. 1 must mention the nauie of Airs. T. Waites, who had a great deal to do with the bazaar, and also that of Jliss Jijou, who was at the door, and looked well after the Stances.
