NEW ZEALAND MERCHANT'S OBSERVATIONS. ANOTHER RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR PROBABLE. Per Press Association. Auckland, Monday. An Auckland merchant, Mr. G. W. S. Patterson, has just returned from ii foreign tour. Discussing the relations of Japan and Russia, he quite confidently predicts that in six or seven years these two nations must once more meet in I war. Both nations are aware that this is ahead of them. Russia is actively engaged in preparing for it, concentrating troops in Northern Manchuria and
populating the great Transhaikaal country. On the other hand, Mr. Patterson • points out, Japan is in a somewhat parlous plight. Her people are crying out bitterly against the taxation that the late war has brought upon them. They are unwilling to populate Manehurian territory as Japan desires, because they must fight for every inch of that country. Mr. Patterson speaks of the improved demeanour of China towards foreigners, but expressed the opinion that none the less tlie Chinese are working for '"China for the Chinese."
