FEDERAL MAIL CONTRACT.
Melbourne, November 10. The Federal Premier, Mr Deakin, explains that the mail contract, for which the subsidy is £170,000 per annum, provides for the extension of the service to Brisbane, with a special service to Hobart during six months of the year. The period of transit is to be reduced to 038 hours—a reduction of 58 hours. The steamers are to be built in accordance with plans approved by the Government, each providing space' for two thousand tons of cargo in the cool storage department. The first of the new boats is to be ready within eighteen months from the commencement of the contract, and one new one is to be completed each year afterwards. Only white labor is to be employed, but there is to be no discrim! nation between unionists and nonumomsts.
