Petitions were circulated in the city to-day praying -the Minister of Justice to revise the sentences passed on bookmakers this week. Two thousand signatures were obtained in the first hour. Feeling 13 very strong against the Racing Club, whicli is said to have allowed "swell "bookies" to ply their trade iu the patldoek with impunity, while several other men were prosecuted and sent to prison. , ~v;i/:■?-: The Christchurch members of Parliament were inundated with telegrams from Christchurch residents protesting against the sentences imposed upon the Christchurch bookmakers for trespassing on the local racecourse, and the complaints were brought before the Minister for Justice. Mr. McGowan stated that he could do nothing in the matter, but lie would obtain a report regarding it from the Stipendiary Magistrate.
