WELLINGTON WOOL SALES. Per Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The first wool sale of the season was held here to-day: There were about ' forty buyers present. Bidding was not animated. Prices were on the average from Id to 1 y :: i\ less than at the opening sale of last season, 111 sympathy with the decline in London, though good crossbreds realised within a farthing of the iiest price realised Inst November. Many lots were passed, offers not reaching owners' ideas of value. The catalogue comprised 1700 bales, and the condition generally was good. Prices ranged as follows:—Super halfbred lid to ll'/ 2 d, medium halfbred lOd to 10'/ 2 d, inferior fl'/id to fl%d, super crossbred 9'/od to lOd. medium to inferior 7d to B'/ 4 d, bellies and pieces Cd to B'/ 2 d, stained pieces and locks 3d to 4d, dead 5%d to 7%d, crutchings 4%d to Cd. Cattle.—Oll Friday at Awakino I helcl my annual spring cattle fair. Upwards of 1000 head yere yarded, mostly 2 to .IVs-year steers of good quality. There was a good attendance of buyers, an.l the bulk of the pens were quitted at satisfactory prices. Mixed yearlings made 355, heifer do. 30s, 18 1110s. heifers 41s, 2-year do. 47s (id, 12 to 18 1110s. steers £2 10s to £2 15s, 2-vear do. £3 19s, ' 2'/s to 3Vis-year bullocks £4 lis 3d to ! £5 Bs. forward and store cows £3 7s Cd to £4 13s.
At Waiwakaiho 011 Tuesday there was ;i good yarding and attendance. Heifer yearlings made 3(ta. steers £2 5s to £2 10s, 18 1110s. empty heifers 39s Cd, store cows 35s to 50s, forward do. £3 to £3 10s.
At Stratford the same day my weekly heifer sale was well attended, and satisfactory prices were realised for all Springers. (iood heifers made £5 to £O, small and backward do. £3 2s Od to £4 12s fid, cows £4 7s Cd to £C.
At Raliotu on Thursday tho yards were full, and there was a large attendance, nearly everything selling at ruling rates. Y*ry little of the-new sea-, son's clip,csme to hand. Calfskins arid tallow maintained recent rates, while hides-and sheepskins made a further define. This was most marked in hides of light or inferior quality. The drop in is accounted for owing to . AW decline in price of best pelts in London of from 80 to 100 per cent, as well lis a\ steady decline that wool lias made recently in the home markets. Owing to the, drought in Australia a tremendous number of cattle are being killed, and the hides rushed into the sales, which accounts, for the decline in light hides and «'hic(i also reacts to a certain extent heavier.
