BRITISH ORDER FOR FOODSTUFFS. COLONIES CANNOT COMPETE. Under the' above headings appeared the following news item in St. James' Budget last month cabled from Washington : "A large contract for tinned meats for tho British army has been placed | with the Libby, McNeill interests, j through the Director of Supplies' De- j partment of the British War Office. j "Tho contract, it is reported, was a \ competitive affair, England, Canada, j Australia, and Brazil entering with | tenders. Quality and method of pack- | ing and sealing got Chicago the busi- I ness. ' "Cables from London state that tho British Government is highly satisfied k with the foodstuffs supplied bv the 3 Chicago packers, and that the War De- 1 partment has every confidence in stock- | •yard firms of repute. "The foods for the British Army, according to one correspondent, will be packed under the supervision of British representatives—at tho invitation of V the packers—although the authorities p were willing to rely upon the new Pure Food Regulations recently inaugurated in tho United States." An interview with a War Office offi- -2 cial printed in a semi-official paper % says: "We had to go to Chicago be- Bl cause the quality of tho foods is superior to any on the world's market. They give us what we require in weight and size, and agree to pack our products in new buildings that are spotlessly clean."
