MINERS ON STRIKE.
WOO NEWCASTLE EMPLOYEES IDLB DISASTROUS EFFECT ON COAL TRADE. Sydney, November 13. A mass meeting of miners will be held to-day to discuss the trouble. The proprietor* will meet on Thursday. , The trouble is already having a disastjvua effect on Newcastle trade. The harbor is full of vessels waiting for cargoes, but no coal is available. Steamer* are returning to Sydney and suuth Coast ports to obtain a loading. In view of the situation, some Sydney coal merchants are refusing to fulfil older*. A stiff advance in the price of coal is anticipated. All hope of effecting an amicable settlement of the mining dlmculty seems for the present at any rate, to have vanished, and a general strike will comirence to-day. It w expected that all nines in the northern district will be idle.
At the mines at which work was resumed yesterday the men were under the impression that, for their working wilee days, all the wages, amounting to 4.25,000, would be paid. A further effort will lie made to reach ft settlement. The member of I'irliaBsent (or the district is endeavoring to fvlmulate proposals to have the questions in dispute submitted to the Premier, who is understood to be willing to •ct as mediator or arbitrator. The miners' committee of management Beets to-day to discuss the situation. About 8000 mine employees would be tendered idle by a general 6trike. The Xitn declare their determination not to **eede from their demands. The proprietors likewise show no signs of weakening, and are strongly opposed to making further concessions. It is understood the miners at the Kemlila vine have decided to strike in sympathy, •nd it is believed others will foilow suit. The situation is very grave.
