SPOTSWOOD SETTLEMENT

In reference to the eil'orts made by the Ta.ranaki County Council to collect rates upon forfeited Spotswood sections, the lion. Minister for Lands has written to the County Clerk aB follows:

"Referring to your letter of the 12th October, and my reply of the ISth October, re rates on Spotswood Settlement, this is a matter which is entirely in the hands of the Commissioner of * Crown Lands and the Taranaki Land Board, nnd the only additional relief which it would be in the power of the Land Board to grant you would be that provided for by section 42 of the Land 1 iiw.s Amendment Hill, which would probably become law within the next few days."

Section 42 repeals section 124 of the Land Act, 181)2, and provides that "the Board may in every case declare that any rales not exceeding two years' arrears due by an outgoing lessee or licensee are a charge upon any moneys leceived bv the Board from an incoming lessee or licensee for improvements on the land, am] n , ny ply to n]iy , ociil authorily out of such moneys tile amount of rates so charged thereon."
