BOROUGH COUNCIL
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Hit Worship the Mayor (Mr. E. Dockrill) presided, and there were also present Councillors Boon, Bellringer, West, Coleman, Collis, Mills, Morey, and Browne. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer (Mr. A. H. Kendall) reported having completed the drain at the abattoirs. He recommended calling tenders for opening new and old drains to drain the abattoirs swamp. In reference to Mr. Bradbury's application for sewer extension in Fulford-street, he reported that" the service "was much needed, and several residents had laid drains to connect. For an expenditure 01 £77 seventeen connections could be secured. To connect Mr. Robinson's premises in Bulteel-street would cost £B, and four properties would be enabled tc use the sewer. The clause relating to draining the swamp at the abattoirs war- referred to the Abattoirs Committee. DRAINAGE COMMITTEE. The Drainage Committee recommend- [ e:I that the borough engineer be authorised to extend the sewers in Robe street to about 2'/ 2 chains above the intersection of Vivian-street, £45; in Eliotstreet to the High School, £77; temporary sewer in Lemon-street, for a chain west of Eliot-street; Fulford-street, £77; Bulteel-strect, £8; Gill-street (Govcr-street to near Ilobson-street and Eliot-street (Devon-street to Gill-street), cost £205; and that consideration of 3)i. W. Courtney's application for the Council to lay drains to his property ("Round House"), the cost to be re-
funded in instalments, be deferred. Cr. Bellringer opposed the proposal to spend £77 in connecting up the High School, which did not pay a shilling a year in general rates to" the borough. He moved that the clause be deleted. Cr. Boon seconded. The Mayor said the school sanitation should be kept as up-to-date as possible, in view of the danger from epidemics. The extension would earn £4 15s a year, cr fair interest on the outlay. Cr. Mills considered the matter should be deferred, and that in the meantime the High School Board be asked to state what financial assistance they would give towards the cost of connecting the school with the town drainage system. He moved an amendment accordingly, and Cr. Morey seconded.
Cr. Bellringcr's amendment was withdlawn and Cr. Mills' suggestion adopted. The report was then adopted. The engineer recommended a progress payment of £3O to Mr. Montefiore, contractor for earthwork in Liardet-strcet. —Adopted.
