RAILWAY CLASSIFICATION BILL.
Per I'reßS Association. Dunedin, Friday. The new Classification Bill has caused very pronounced dissatisfaction among aU brandies of the railway service locally. The man, when they recently ventilated their grievances, had built their hopes on the announced amended classification, but their hopes have been shattered. The men of the first division are disgusted with th» treatment meted out to them, and th» service throughout was to-day almost in a state of ferment at the proposals included in the Bill, and the position is considered to be aggravated by the fact that the Vast and Telegraph officials have scored so well. Stress is laid on the responsibilities of railway servants as compared with post and railway servants. In regard to the first division, there is a marked improvement so far as lads entering the service are concerned, but a glance ahead and it is held to be sufficient to stop anyone from joining the railway service. As to the second division, guards complain strongly they lmve received a sixpence increase, but the number to which that applies lias been considerably reduced to what it would havo been if the riles had been given straight out according to the present grading'. A meeting of the first division was held this evening, and a resolution strdngly condemnatory of the now classification was passed.
