MAKETAWA. (From Uur Own Correspondent.) Splendid weather has Wn experienced during tin.* last week or .so, and farmers have taken full advantage of it ploughing and sowing all kinds of crops. The extremely lough time we had during the latter end of JSeptemlier and almost the whole of October delayed this work in a manner that had a depressing effect on many, and the amount of work that lias been got through during the present line spell shows that the farmers are determined to make up for lost time if possible. During October the loss of stock in this part of the district was considerable, scarcely a farmer but had something of the sort to report. We do not want another visitation like that in a hurry.
The milk-supply to the factory is on the increase rapidly, and it seems that, notwithstanding the bad start, this season will, if favorable conditions continue, be much better than previous ones. Influenza has played "Old Harry" round the district this year, scarcely a household but has supplied a victim.. And whooping-cough and colds, big and small! Well, but it has been a caution. Mr. M. Dodunski has, I understand, purchased the ilti-odd acre farm lately owned by the late Mr. 15. Langley on Durham-road west.
At the Durham-road school on Thursday evening last a largo audience at- [ tended the concert promoted in aid of tho proposed technical classroom at Inglewooil. A:t excellent programme was submitted and greatly appreciated by those presold. The children's items were gone through in a manner both pleasing to parents and visitors, the latter being loud in their praises of the evident care the teacher (Miss M. Papps) takes in her charges. Mr. L. Mackie.'of Kaimala (a regular host in himself) presented to a Durham-road audience for the first time a collection of comic and character songs, and in each item simply took the audience with hinij being greeted with round ;.fter round of applause. Mr. 13. Andersor, of Midhirst, gave several recitations in the Dutch dialect, and, it is needless to sav, caused great merriment. Miss .Ma-kie also contributed to the enjoyment of the evening by singing several songs, w/iich were much appreciated. The programme was as follows;--Piano solo, Miss A. Sole; Bong. Miss (}. Simpson; song, school children; song, Mr. Mackio (ei cored); song, Miss C. Bridgemun, "Flower Girl," very nicely rendered; recitation, Mr. E. Anderson (encored); song. Miss Mackio (encored); recitation, Miss 1). Simpson; song, "Japanese Fans." schoolgirls; song, Mr. Maokie (encored : song, Mrs. Williams; song, school chile ren; song, Miss Maekie (encored); song, 'T'/ease Gave me a Penny," Miss Evelyn a school pupil (this item was well rendered and pleased the audience greatly); song, Mr. Mackio (encored); song, schoolgirls. An extra action song by School children brought a most enjoyable entertainment to a close. Daieing was indulged in afterwards, the large room being taxed to provide accommodation.. TJie Durham road folk- are greatly indebted to those who came from a distance to help make; liie concert the success it was. It also shows that the object of the entertainment (funds for technical school) has lhe sympathy of the public. The school committee has now raised the £5 as their contribution to the school in Inglewood. |
