m News "was received in Wellington by cable from Sydney yesterday ol the death of Mr. .'lame's Linton, formerly a director and one of the promoters of the Wellington and Manawatu Kailway Conipanv. Air. A. Daylv, well' known for many years as one of the most prominent Ruxl.y footballers in New Zealand, is at present in a most critical state of health. Mr. Bayly has been in failing health now for some considerable time, _ Messrs Alfred and Joseph Christinas, brothers, and members of the dairy proi duec firm of I.ovell and Christmas (wao have extensive dealings with New Zealand, and who have for years been represented by Mr Kowin) died in London [ recently on successive days. Mr S. F. Anderson, manager for the
past two years of the State fann at Waerenga, is relinquishing that position to take up the duties of a fruit inspector in Auckland under the Department. He will be. succeeded by Mr W. 13. Rawson, well-known in agricultural matters in Opotiki, and formerly in the coastal district of T.iranaki.
The Inglewood Record publishes a paragraph to the i fleet that Mr Bowater, of the northern end of the electorate, and a follower of Mr. Massey, is likely to contest the Tauiuaranui seat with llr Jennings at the next general election. '•
A Press Association telegram from Wellington announces the death of Sir James Hector, K.C.M.G., F.R.S., at the age of 74 years. He earned a worldwide reputation in connection with his surveys and explorations in the Rockies,
and his many scientific works on NewZealand anil other subjects. As Director of the Geological Survey of New Zealand and Chancellor of the University of New Zealand he was widely known.
