SPORTING.

m RACING LN AUSTRALIA. FLEMOJGTON NOTES. Flemingtou, November 4. Melodrama covered half a mile in 54 sec, Lady Diffidence made a similar journey in olsee, Proceedor a mile in Imin 53sec. Mooltan, Mountain King, Peru, and Tartan were not out for watchbreaking, but put in strong working gallops. It is reported that Mountain King, Tangaroa, Socialist, and Mazarin are not likely to start in the Cup race. Latest quotations are—2 to 1 against Apologue, 6 to 1 Mountain King, 10 to 1 each Welcome Trist and Mooltan, 14 to 1 Dyed Garments, 20 to 1 Tartan, Bendigo,

COMMENT ON THE DERBY. Sydney, November 4. The Herald says: "The Victorian Derby field was well up to the average in point of numbers and possibly in point of quality. Mountain King won the race with a length to spare, but, by means of an impressive performance at the bottom of the straight, Peru appeared to have his measure. It was rather a case of Peru stopping than the big colt going on. It cannot be said that Welcome Trist was ridden a good race. He was kept in the rear division right round to the abattoirs, and shortly after his rider was disappointed in trying to get up on the inside, and the colt again fell back last, remaining there to tlio home turn. Tn the final struggle he finished game enough, and lost second money only by a head. The result so far as the winner is concerned might have been the same under any circumstances, but Welcome Trist was asked to give Mountain King almost au imppossible start from the home turn. Tangaroa showed plenty of pace in the early stages of the race, but he failed to see it out. Master Foote was the greatest disappointment of the lot; but the strong wind was apparently much against him. The time was fair, yet the field seemed to have no pace on." The Telegraph says: "Derby day has become essentially a day for women. It is estimated there were four of them to one man present on Saturday. A feature of the race was that New South Wales provided all Che seven who contested the blue riband. All doubts as to pace were soon dispelled, Tangaroa sailing along in front at a good solid pace with Peru and Mountain King next. Tangaroa shot his bolt at the home turn, and began to die out of the contest; and there Lady Rylstone hid joined Peru and Mountain King, the trio coming into the straight together. Mazarin and Master Foote were hopelessly beaten, and, while Lady Rylstone began to falter, Welcome Trist improved his position. After a sharp but short effort approaching the end of the lawn, Mountain King drew out by a little over a length, and, though both Peru and Welcome Trist challenged the favorite and desperately fought "to the finish, they at no time looked like settling the leader, who secured the verdict by a length. Master Foote's performance was most disappointing."

CLOSING QUOTATIONS. Received Nov. 5, 0.8 a.m. November 4. Steady rain fell all the afternoon, but the weather is clearing and promises to be fine for Cup day. The city is crowded with visitors, but there is no great amount of wagering over the Cup, for which the latest quotations arc 2 to 1 against Apologue, 5 to_l Poseidon, 7 to 1 Mooltan, 8 to 1 Welcome Trist and Mountain King, 10 to 1 Dyed Garments, 14 to 1 Tartan, 20 to 1 Spinaway and Lady Diffidence, 25 to 1 Peru and Tulkeroo, 33 to 1 Melodrama. The trainer of Mountain King says the colt is unlikely to start in the Cup if the weather is unfavorable.

SYDNEY PRICES. Received Nov. 5, 0.37 a.m. Sydney, Novemlier 4. Local quotations for the Melbourne Cup are 3 to 2 against Apologue, 4 to 1 Poseidon, 6 to 1 Mooltan, 1 to 1 Mountain King, 9 to 1 Welcome Trist, 12 to 1 Dyed Garments and Tartan. THE MELBOURNE CUP.

(By "Moturoa. •') To-day is Melbourne Cup day. The field of twenty-six final acceptors contain such fliers as Poseidon, Tartan, Mooltan; the sensational ex-New Zealandcr, Apologue; the winner of the A..1.C. and V.R.C. Derbys, Mountain King; and the unlucky Welcome Trist. It is common talk 'that Apologue has been held for this race, and his chance with 7st 91b looks second to none. The following are the acceptors:—Poseidon (including 1011) penalty)' 10.3, Tartan 9.9, Melodrama 8.8, Proceedor 8.4, Mooltan 7.11, Ellis 7.9, tulkeroo 7.9, Apologue 7.9, Dyed Garments 7.5. Muznrin 7.8, Tangaroa 7.7, Comely 7.0, Myra 7.(1, Mountain King 7.(1. Spinawav 7.5, Peru 7.5, Thackeray 7.1, Jack Smith (1.12, Lady Esmc 0.11, Master Foote 0.11, Socialist 0.11, Knox 0.9, Bendigo 0.9, Welcomc_ Trist 0.7, Lady Diffidence 0.7, Moani 0.7. Poseidon has a great weight to carry, but nothing seems to stop the champion, and he may bo. depended upon to run a good race. The best of the three-year-olds Mountain King, Peru,

and Welcome Trist—are expected to make a bold showing, and Apologue is looked upon in most quarters as a certainty. He certainly must run well.
