His dam, Duchess of Alexandra, was a most successful prize-winner, having gained the following prizes, viz.:— First and champion at Tapanui ('South Island) as a two-year-old. First prize at Egmont A. and P. Society's Show. First and champion at Wanganui. Judge Belden (imp.) was sired by Elmo (1801), time 2,17; first dam, Prentus, by Niagara, time 2.15, sire of Fairmount, time 2.22, and Fanny Maker, 2.15; g dam of the great American mare Maud S., time (high-wheeled sulky) 2.8%; Elmo, sire Como, time 2.26'/^, Alfred, sire Como, time 2.21; Elma, sire Como, time 2.24; T. C. Lee, sire Como, time 2.15. Mohawk (004), the sire of Elmo, time 2.12; was also the sire of Clark's Mohawk, time 2.25; and in turn the sire of Yellow Dock, time 2.11, and many others with 2.30 records. Judge Belden, sire of Count Belden, was sold with a public trial of 2.17, and was the most handsome stallion that ever left America. At the Eoyal Agricultural Show, Sydney, N.S.W., he gained First and Champion Prizes three years in succession. His sire, Vanity Fair, represents the third generation ot a brilliant line of sires, bred by Mr. Burdott Coutts, wherein the notorious high-stepping Norfolk blood of old Confidence has been hardened and improved in size, bone, and quality by successive crosses of Trilfit's Fireaway, the great Yorkshire sire. His dam, Vanity, is by Vigorous U215 E. 11.5.8.) out of Lonely (648 E.H.5.8.). Vigorous is also the grand-' sii'e_ of that celebrated hackney, Hedon Squire (14306), the property of Sir Walter Gilbey, Bart.
