CELEBRATION OF KING'S BIRTHDAY
Per lVtss Association. AVanganui, AVednesday. The local Chamber of Commerce applied to the Premier to issue authority for factories and shops to be closed o'i Monday, lltli November, in place of Saturday, the 9th. The Premier has replied that the instructions desired cannot be given, but no action will be taken by the Government against either factories or shops which keep open on the Saturday and close on the Monday. The local representative of the Labor Department, however, states that nothing can override the law forbidding the employment of females and youths on the Saturday afternoon, and though the Government may overlook the transgression, a union might take proceedings, and in that ease the Arbitration Court would, be bound to take action. Maslerton, AA'ednesday.
The Mayor has been authorised to proclaim Saturday, oth November, a holiday, in view of the technicalities raised by a AVellington union and the risk of a breach of trade union awards.
