From Our Own Correspondents. WAITARA. Messrs A. W. Ogle and G. H. Stubbs are at present on a visit to Wellington. Mr D. (Jeorge, formerly of New Plymouth, has opened a bicycle in McLean street, and has an excellent display of wheels that should soon be seen running in the streets. Mr and Mrs W. Birdling leave immediately for a trip to Canterbury, their former home.

Mrs CI. R. Croll is away on an extended visit to Wanganui and Turakina. Mr Croll is expected to return from Australia about the middle of Novemlier, on Ihe re-opening of the lorn I freezing work's. Mr Percy Bishop, our popular (el«jrraphist. is away on a fortnight's lui'iday. The proposed Catholic Church is in course of construction. It occupies a central position, and its completion will •rive much pleasure to adherents. Messis

"Musical pieces, recitations, drill, and other items, some by very young children, made up a varied and interesting programme, and delighted a large audience of parents, friends and visitors. Never have T seen a better organised nor a more successful school concert, and Mr Pope and his assistants were congratulated and londl.v ehecod at the conclusion. The children having had (heir enjoyment, the room was cleared, and the night's pleasure increi--ed by a dance, nearly a hundred participating.

The Waitara Harbor Board's monthly meeting -Wits held on the 25th inst. The report showed that since last report was presented H vessels, aggregating 09!) tons, had entered, and 15 vessels, aggregating COD tons, had cleared the port. Dredging operations in the river are proceeding satisfactorily, and over 600 yards of silt have during the month been re-

moved from the river-bed. Some little dissatisfaction with the electric lighting of the wharf was expressed at the mecsing, and steps are to be taken to reme lv any defects. Mr. lVrcy Wortliington's farm oil the outskirts of Waitara, recently bought by .Mrs. Worthington, of Stratford, has been subdivided and sold in lots varying from three to eighty acres. Several new houses are in course of erection thereon. Mr. Williamson has sold his extendve grocery business to Mr. Harry Langman, formerly of Nathan and Co., who is n o\v carrying on same.

URENUI. Oil Friday evening in the Town Ilail was held a concert to raise funds for a shelter shed at the school and nearly ,£l2 was netted, which amount will lie subsidised by the Education Board. The whole of the first part of the programme consisted of items by the school children who had been splendidly prepared by Mr Pope. Solos, choruses, and recitations succeeded each other with marvellous precision and where all performed so well selection is dilHcult, bill probably the item which best pleased tile lar-re and appreciative audience was the tlocution of Master -Inhn Graham in .his fine rendering of "Mary, Queen of Scuts.' 1 Even the "gods" hearkened. The second part consisted of songs and duets by Mr. and Mrs. Wilkes (Waitara), who were duly encored. Mr Rca also contributed an item, and the always welcome and popular Ml'. Farmer had to reply to undeniable encores. Miss Wilson played the accompaniments in her usual perfect style, and together with Mrs. Cannell and Miss Dumbleton played the 'overtures—pianoforte trios, which, being novelties here, were duly appreciated. The concert concluded wi'h a sketch. "The Green Room" (written by Mr. Pope). The performers, who were all school pupils, acted their several parts, well, but pride of place goes to Master Bert Pascoe, who as ofiiee-boy wag excellent. A dance, at which some forty couples were present, followed. Music was supplied by Miss Wilson, Miss Duinblelon. and Mr. Rowe. Mr. Thompson acted as M.C. On Monday evening the lillon Company played to a good house, and may expect a better one oil their return.
