ELEPHANT FIRE BRIGADE

o New York, August 28. The following remarkable story is published in a newspaper here:— A train was wrecked by a collision on tliu (lalti'morc and Ohio railyay near Morgantown, Virginia. Meanwhile eight other performing elephants, taken from their vans, m obedience to their instructor, organised a voluntary fire brigade. With the utmost docility and precision the animals repeatedly filled their trunks with water taken from the Monongahela river, and emptied the contents on the lilaziug cars, successfully extinguishing the (lames.
