ELEPHANT FIRE BRIGADE
o New York, August 28. The following remarkable story is published in a newspaper here:— A train was wrecked by a collision on tliu (lalti'morc and Ohio railyay near Morgantown, Virginia. Tim driver was pinned beneath piles of wreckage, soma of which caught lire. It seemed that nothing could sure him, when a train with a travelling circus arrived.
Instantly the trainer saw to the removal of the animals, and ordered Bacil, a huge elephant, said to he the mother of .[umbo, and over 200 years old, to lift (ho burning piles from the spot beneath which the groans of the driver could he heard. Dexterously avoiding the llames, liaeil seized the wreckage piece by piece with her trunk, finally catching the driver by the coat and swinging him safely out, scorched, but not seriously hurt.
Meanwhile eight other performing elephants, taken from their vans, m obedience to their instructor, organised a voluntary fire brigade. With the utmost docility and precision the animals repeatedly filled their trunks with water taken from the Monongahela river, and emptied the contents on the lilaziug cars, successfully extinguishing the (lames.
