FARM AND DAIRY.
The lambing returns in and around Tablelands, Wairarapa, show a percentage of 120. It is stated that many horses in Ashburton county are unwell, and showing the symptoms of influenza.
There was considerable mortality among the lambs at Kaikoura during a recent storm. One settler lost 400, another 150, and a third over 100. It is stated that some extensive land purchases have been made in the Thames Valley district, and that the deposit en one tvan.-action alone amounts to £of 100. A farmer in the district of Waterlon, A.-lihiirlon, reports an exceptionally large percentage of lambs. Out of a Hock- of 74 ewes lie has docked 111 lambs. The following figures show the number of live stock in New Zealand:— Horses, mules and asses, 343,030; swine, 242,273; cattle, 1,851,750; dairy cows (included in the foregoing), 534,027; sheep, 20,108,471. A few months ago, at Mr Arthur Smith's sale (says the Kaikoura Star). Mr I). Boyd, junr., bought a few sheep, four-tooth rams, Hint had not been in tin- hands of the shearer. The other day Mr Boyd shore of the sheep, and its fleece turned the scale at 331b! The butchers of Timaru find gre.il dillieiiltv just now in obtaining supplies of beef. There is such a slinrtago of fat 'stuck as to necessitate sending away to soul hern centres for cattle. The result of this is that high prices have In be paid for "fats," and cattle only half fat have often to lie killed.
There is every possibility (says the Levin Farmer) that the whole of the milk produced in the district of Levin during next winter will be railed to Wellington to supply the needs of the city with fresh milk.
