THREATENED RAILWAY STRIKE
THE COMPANIES' ATTITUDE. Received Oct. 24, 20.28 p.m. ' * London, October 24. Lord Claude Hamilton, chairman of the Railway Companies' Association, has issued a statement giving the reasons of the railway companies firmly resisting the demands of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. The Board of Trade, the statement declares, controls the railways in many respects, also the men's hours, and there must bo* no further control by an irresponsible body. The railways cannot be moved or closed, nor in the case of the unions committing a breach of faith c.in the railways order a lock-out, whereas a union can order a strike. Therefore, he continues, railway campaniesa and unions, if the Jailer's demands were recognised, would be on unequal terms, and the railways, be placed at the mercy of the unions. He concludes that the demands for recognition is only the first move in a deep-laid campaign of the socialist forces impelling trades unions against individualism and capital. <
