THE BREAKWATER SERVICE.
It' a J unly is sliipjmig h Uor.se to Onej lO i« not able to truck .the animal to the breakwater. He lias to unload at the New Plymouth station and lead hi* horse to Molmoa. Jt is the same in regard to the other direction. A horse' coming l>y boat lias to be led from the | -ithiirf to the Now Plymouth station and thei'e entrained. The reason is that there ;ue no facilities for unloading and loading Jiorses at the breakwater. Now, there must tie a large tiumlier of horses shipped from 2sew Plymouth to OneImpga and vice versa every year, anil the inconvenience, expense, and delay eaused by tile lack of loading facilities are hardly calculated to bring the port into good repute. At very Jittlo expense the Railway Department could provide the necessary facilities. There is room and to spare at the foot of the wharf for a siding or a place suitable for loading and unloading. It is a source ol wonder to us that the Department, which obtains such substantial profits from the working of the breakwater line, lias failed to provide such a necessary convenience long beInre this. Cattle, sheep, and pigs are taken right through. "Why not horses? We hope the townspeople will take the matter up and at the first opportunity mako representations to the Minister for railways with the view of having the facilities provided.
