Martin, Esq., Auchendean, Dumbartonshire, by Crown Prince (207 C.5.8.), out of Darling (241 C.5.8.), out of Lord Salisbury's dam Darling, by Galbraith's Tintock. Lord Salisbury and Damsel have unbroken records. DAM: Empire' 3 dam, by i'nnce of Windsor, Royal Prince's dam Maid of Avon; by Young Banker (1 N.Z.5.8.), out Jean Aikenhead, by Avon Chief (150, Vol. 111., N.Z.5.8.), out of Fanny, by McFarlane~s Prince of Wales, out of a Duke of Buccleuch's mare. Maid of Avon, when shown at Oamaru, took Second Prize as a yearling to Mr. M. Holmes' Nonpareil III.; as a two-year-old, second to same; a> a three-year-old, also second to same filly. Jean Aikenhead took Second Prize as a three-year-old at Oamaru in 1885—sold to Murray, Roberts and Co. Avon Chief (bred by William Boag, Esq.), by Prince of Kilbride (imp., 10062), out of Grace Darling (36), by Prince Charlie (imp., 4626), out of Bess (35), by Sir Colin Campbell. EMPIRE took First Prize at Amberley and Second Prue at Rangiora as a yearling; as a two-year-old, Second Prize at Leeston and Second Prize at Rangiora. His sire, Royal Prinee, took First Prize at Waimate Show as a two-year )ld in 1893; Second Prize as a three-year-old at Timaru in 1834; and Second Prize in the All-Aged Class in 1896. His stock took First Prizes in all classes of two-year-olds at Rangiora in 1900; First and Champion at Amberley in yearlir-js in 1901; First in three-year-olds; Second and Third in yearlings; and also Championship at the Rangiora Show Grounds; Second at Leeston, and Third at Christchurch the same year. ARMADALE STUD, OKAIAWA. TAUANAKI, N.Z. TO STAND THIS SEASON, Tie Champion Clydesdale Stallion, LORD EESKINE. JjOKD EESKINE is a very superior well-bred bay horse of the very best quality, aud true type of the Clydesdale bleed, standing lti hands 3 1 /. ineiics high, iie is a very massive horse, with clean llat bones, strong, well-formed joints, beautiful long silky hair, and grandlyformed round feet of good quality, with fine broad liojf heads. He has a beautiful head, aud eyes characteristic os courage and endurance, a good neck and crest, well-sprung ribs, remarkably good loins and strong short-coupled back. His action, both at the walk and trot, is all that can be desired. Altogether he is a most compactly-built, well-put-toge-ther specimen of a draught horse. Lord Erskine was bred by J. S, Holmes of Awamoa, Oarnaru, and is by the imported sire "Sandy Erskine," who is the sire of the well-known champion mare, "Lady Erskine"—owned by A. Alexander, Esq., Nurmanby, Taranald—the dam of the champion two-year-old colt, Marcel lus, recently purchased by W. Taylor, Esq., Te Awamutu, at the record price of 750 guineas. Lord Erskine's Dam, I'earl 11., is by the famous sire, Crown l'rince, grand dam Sapphire, dam of Accountant, winner of numerous first prizes; this mare has only been beaten by her stable companion's great grand dam, Pearl, a mare specially selected by the late J. B. Blair, and imported on account of the late Hon. Ifattliew Holmes. From the foregoing it will be seen that Lord Erskine is descended from the very best blood of good breeding strains, and he is certain to prove a getter of the best type of Clydesdales. His show ring successes prove him to be a horse of individual high-class merit. In 1906 he gained the following awards: At Ashburton, first and champion; at the International Show, Christchurch, second prize and reserve champion, also first prize for best stallion in the walking competition (beating the champion stallion Pride of Newton), and first prize for Lord Rothschild's silver bowl for the best Colonial-bred stallion (Shire or Clydesdale) by an imported eire, thus gaining the highest number of awards at the Show. Lord Erskine was purchased in April, 1907, at a cost of 800 guineas by F. A. Bremer, of Okaiawa, Taranaki, fr"m Mr Robt. Clarke, Rosemeath Stud, A*hburton.
