TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.

Ihe Education Board resumed its meeting on Wednesday, all the members being present. PAYMENT OF TEACHERS. It was decided, on the motion of Messrs. Monkhouse and Trimble, "That the Department be advised that the proposed payment of teachers by Post Office Older would be both more costly in exchange and (under the conditions in this district) less satisfactory than payment by cheque. This Board would again urge that provision should be made for the payment of cheques to teachers free of exchange, uther by arrangements made by the Government or by the Government providing the Board with the funds necessary for the payment of exchange." THE ''SCHOOL JOURNAL."

Mr Mcllroy, secretary of the Tarauaki Teachers' Institute, asked what readers the ''School Journal" is intended to replace. The same question had been .sent to the Minister for Education, who had replied that it was the function of the Hoard to decide the question. On the motion of Messrs. Monkhouse ami .Morison, it was decided to inform the Institute that the Board does not at present intend the "School Journal" should replace either of the readers, but be used as a sight-reader, ami when it had been read at school it should be handed to the pupils to take home for further perusal, one copy to be filed at the school as a record. A TEACHER'S WORK.

Mr. J. H. Rice (headmaster at Bell Block) asked permission to accept the position of auditor for the Bell Block Dairy Company, and added that the work would not interfere with his school duties.

T. H. Western wrote drawing attention to Mr. Rice's appointment" as auditor, and added, "I believe it is against the regulations."

Mr. Tiscli moved, and Mr. Morton seconded, that permission be granted. • An amendment was proposed by Messrs. Faull and Morison, "That Mr Rice be informed that the Board cannot accede to his request," Mr. Faull considering that teachers should not enter into competition with men who made their living by auditing and such work. Hie amendment was carried. TEACHERS' VACANCIES.

Four applications wore received for the position of assistant mistress at Norfolk-road. The following will bo sent on to the committee:— Miss L. A. Hart, part D, Inglewood; Miss A. E. Hamerton, E3, Salisbury-road. Fresh applications will be called for the position of first assistant at Inglewood, RESIGNATION'S. The following resignations were accepted:—!). P. Evans, Inglewood; Miss 1' innerty, Is orfqlk-road; Miss Morrison, pupil teacher. The chairman regretted that ill-health should have caused Miss Morrison to retire from the profession, Is she had great promise. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. Leave of absence was granted to the following teachers on account of illness: Miss Hamerton, assistant, Salisburyroad; Mr. Turkington, headmaster, Mahoe. The latter teacher and the Mahoe committee will be reminded of the necessity for notifying illness . PUPIL TEACHEK EXAMINATIONS.

. The Inspectors reported that a deputation from the Taranaki Teachers' Institute had waited on them with a request that the special examinations for pupil teachers should be held before the midwinter holidays instead of, as at present, in December. The Inspectors had given the matter their careful attention, and recommended that the request be acceded to.

The Board adopted the recommendation, on the motion of Messrs. Monkhouse and Adlarn. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee recommended—That the Board grant a £ for £ subsidy up to £l2 to the Huiakaina committee for improvement to the schoolground under the supervision of Mr. Kennedy; that in reply to the Newall-road committee's letter they be informed, with regard to their application for assistance in fencing the road frontage, that the lease to Mr. Ducker contained a covenant to fence, and that the Board look to him to complete the work, and with regard to their request for assistance towards the cost of draining, filling, and metalling around the school and for spouting and tank, that they be informed that the Board did not see its way to make any grant until such time as tlie permanency of the attendance was assured, and that the inspector be asked to supply a tablo as required; that the Board grant the Opunake committee a supply of plants for planting around the residence and paddock and for drain-pipes to take the overllow from the school tanks and lavatories; that the matter of a leak in the Inglewood school lobby be referred to Mr. Morton, with power to act; that the letter of the Waitara committee calling attention to the blinds and locks in the school be referred to the chairman, with power to act;,that the architect attend to a leak reported in the roof of the Kaimata school; that the amount granted for Improvements to the grounds at Oaonui be paid over to the committee; that the chairman deal with the application of the Stratford committee for improvements to the headmaster's residence; that the Board supply to the Bell Block committee material for post and wire fence around the residence, the committee to erect the fence, and that the Board supply plants for a live hedge; that in reply to their letter offering 123 towards the cost of erecting new latrines at the Fitzroy school, the committee be informed that the Board will call for fenders for the work, and upon receipt of the money a tender will be accepted for the erection of the building; that the correspondence in regard to the state o'f the Tariti residence be forwarded to the Department, and that they be asked to grant funds for the erection of a new residence on the ground recently acquired from the .School Commissioners; that the custodian of the Board's offices be granted an increase of wages from £1 to £1 5s per month.

GENERAL. The Department askecl what accommodation was provided by Mr. Pennington for the i'urangi school, and also what the Board considered a fair lent for such accommodation. The secretary had replied that -Mr. Pennington had set aside a large room in his accommo-dation-house for school purposes; that the Board considered 7s Od a week would be a fair rental, but that the Board would recommend the Department to continue to pay 10s a week in preference to erecting a school building. The Department asked for a return of £22 5s 2d obtained as house-allow-ance for the teacher of the Tongaporutu -school, it having now been shown that the teacher had a house all the time.— Referred to the chairman to communicate with the. Department. A screen will be erected in front of the girls' offices at Iluirangi. An application by Jlr. A. Askfiw for reduction of rent from C 3 to ,C2 10s a year for the Denbigh-road school reserve was referred to the Reserves Committee.

The action of the following committees in closing their schools on account of illness among the pupils was confirmed: Kahui-road, I'ruti, Lincolnroad, Norfolk-road, and Denbigh-road. Messrs. Bothaui and Stringer will be asked to act as commissioners for the Rowan school district until the next annual meeting of householders. . ' 1 |(1 action of the Waitui commissioners in appointing Mr. R. T. Williams to fill Mr. Bishop's place was confirmed. The Inspectors will inquire into and report upon the application of the Kaliuiroad committee for a full-time school
