' The Anglican Synod, on the motion for the second reading, rejected a Bill by which the appointment of committees would be made not merely by a majority vote of each order, but by a sytsem in which <'sch section would get representation. The chief objection urged was that this would lead to wire-pulling and toVhe formation of parties. The Synod was asked by Mr. E. Hunt to express an opinion on th? subject of the cremation of the human body. JJe said some people in Auckland regarded it as a heathenish practice. The subject was shelved without discussion on a motion to proceed with the next 'business. MAINTENANCE OP MAORI MISSIONS. Per Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. At the Diocesan Synod to-day the question of the Maori mission was discussed at some length, and it was decided to make special efforts to maintain the position of diocese in supporting the men of the Maori Mission Board. 11l view of the increased assessment for the next three years, Bishop Julius expressed the opinion that unless each diocese did its utmost to raise the sums required the whole Maori mission scheme would break down, and the old | system of diocesan independence in re-, gard to Maori work would have to be reverted to.
