PROPOSED VOGELTOWN HALL.
There was only a small attendance last night at a meeting convened by the C'arriiiglou Road Board by request, to consider the proposal to acquire a site and erect a public hall. Mr. C. Carter, chairman of the Board, presided. The sketch plans (prepared by Mr
l<Viiuk Messenger) of a suitable building wore submitted. The plans showed mi iuulitoi'ium of 40ft by 25ft, two ante-rooms of 15ft square, supper-room, and kitchen. It was explained that the suburb was handicapped by the absence of any building for Softool purposes or for holding meetings of sports clubs, ratepayers, etc., or for socials, concerts, Sabbath school and church services. In the discussion which took place it Was stated -that the bulk of the ino;jey would have to be raised in Vogelt'own, for naturally the upper end people were not much interested, having the Upper Oarrington road school building. Mr Browne stated that the build ng would cost about £3OO, and laud could be estimated at £l5O, a total of £450. He reckoned £IOO should be collected
by the time the building was ercoted. I The. Carrington road cricket and hockey clubs should hire the building to the oxtent of £2 10s each per annum, £lO would probably be earned as a sohool, £lO from general revenue from concerts, sooials and elections; the Road Board office could be located there at a a cost of £5 a year. A. total revenue £flo a year, which,'!'vjjoidd leave a fair profit after payment if interest. He did not propose to charge for Sunday school, Church services, orj&r the free library which he thougli&inould bo established and opened on two nights a week.
The chairman reminded the meeting that soating and furniture would have to be provided. Then there were insurance, rates, and a caretaker. He did not favor a circulating library, though a reading-room might be a good idea. It there were a Hfcrary, at any rale it should pay. Could they raise £lofl' in n'n < j istr ' cl? There wel '° onI V about 110 dwellings in the area affected and he canvass would have to be thorough. He thought it would be a mistake to i let this matter drop now. If the or- ] panisation were good, the scheme would prosper without doubt.
Mr Browne offered to supervise the erection free of charge ,a„d said there was little doubt that the interior work would be given by residents. It was unanimously accidad, upon the motion o Messrs Wells and Jordan, to ™*p n thorough canvass of residents and property owners and other.? interested to see what support is forthcommg.
Messrs WPerham ,0. W. Browne. A. Wei s, W. McEwan, H. McEwan. 'M. Healy, Laurent, MoArthnr, M. Jones R. Cock I{. Crockett, C. Onrter, T B WanchcU, and 0. fl ro y, were made a canvassing committee, with power to avid to their number.
