During their stay they paid a visit to the ' local school. In connection with the opening of the ' new Waiwakaiho bridge, it is interesting to note that there are with us still ; settlers whn in the pre-bridge days were 1 obliged to "pad the hoof' through the ; stream. One of these old settlers is Mr. Ci. Bertraml, of Crenui. who enjoys the esteem of a wide circle of Iriends. Dive, is just now on a visit to the district. Dr. Dive, who is a son of Mr. W. E. Dive, now of Auckland, but long a resident of llawera, ived his primary education at the llawera school, of which he was dux foi a year or so; next passed through the Collegiate School, Wanganui, with a very line record in classroom and on the playing tielcls; spent a short time at Otago University: and Jhui proceedjd to London and qualified with distinction for the medical profession. Jjist now he is on a few mouths' holiday trip, and returns to take up an appointment at one of the great London hospitals, St. Bartholomew's. Dive, the well-known footballer, are brotheis ot Dr. Dive. , . An old Maori war veteran m tile poison of Mr Andrew Cole, lute sergeant in the Goth Regiment, passed away on Saturday at the residence of Ins son-in-law .Mr A. Hooker, CourtenayStreot. Fifty-eight years ago lie enlisted for tlie Crimea, and yeais later arrived at Auckland, with his regiment. the unii. After serving througa tile Just Maori war in Auckland and Taranaki, he was transferred to the Transport Corps with the rank of sergeant. Later he took his discharge, i and returned to settle in Taranaki, i talcing up a farm on the Vcale road. For a considerable time he carried on charcoal burning for the early ironsand experiments. Joining the militia, lie served through the second Mauri War. He is survived by seven daughters by his lirst marriage, and one daughter by his secon.i marriage:—Mrs G. Council, Mrs 11. Shirley, Mrs A. Hooker, Mrs G. Cnsebrool; and Mrs J. Higgs (New mouth). Mrs J. rhelan (Sentry ITill), Mrs A. Austin (Nukimniru), Mrs C.
