Avou Chief (bred by William Boag, Esq.), by Prince of Kilbride (imp., 10(ifi2), out of Grace Darling (30), by Prince Charlie (imp., 4620), out of Bess (35), by Sir Colin Campbell. EMPIRE took First Prize at Amberley and Second at Rangiora as a yearling; as a two-year-old, Second Prize at Looston and Second Prize at Rangiora. His sire. Royal Prince, took First Prize at Waimatc Sf'ov,' as a two-year-old in 1803; Second Prize aa a three-year-oid at Timaru in 1894; and Second Prize in the All-Aged Class in 1800. His stock took First Prizes in all classes of two-year-olds at Rangiora in 1000; First and Champion at Amberley in yearlings in 1901; First in three-year-olds; Second and Third in yearlings; and also Championship at the Rangiora Show Grounds; Second at Lceston, and Third at Christchurch the same year. ERSKI2sE is a very superior well-bred bay horse of the very best quality, aiul true lype of the Clydesdale breed, standing 10 hands 3 1 /* incites high, lie is a very jua&sivc horse, with clean Hat bones, strong, well-formed joints, beautiful long silky hair, and grandlyformed rouutl feet of good quality, with line broad hojf heads, lie has a beautiful head, and eyes . characteristic ol courage and endurance, a good neck and crest, well-sprung ribs, remarkably good Joins and strong short-coupled back. His action, both at the walk and trot, is all that can be desired. Altogether he is a most compactly-built, well-put-toge-thcr specimen of a draught horse. Lord Erskine was bred by J. S. Holmes of Awamoa, Oamaru, and is by the imported sire '"Sandy Erskine," who is the sire of the well-known champion mare, "Lady Erskine'—owned by A. Alexander, Esq., Noruianby, Tarunaki—the dam of the champion two-year-old colt, Marcellus, recently purchased by W. Taylor, Esq., Te Awaiuutu, at the ucord price oi' 750 guineas. Lord Erskine's Dam, Pearl 11., is by the famous &irc, Crown Prince, grand dam .'Sapphire, dam of Accountant, winner of numerous first prizes; this mare has only been beaten by her stable companion's great grand dam, Pearl, a mare specially selected by the late J. 33. 131airj and imported on account of the late lion. Matthew Holmes. From the foregoing it will be seen that Lord Erskine is descended from the very best blood of good breeding strains, and he is certain to prove a getter of the best typo of Clydesdales. His show ring successes prove him to be a horse of individual high-clas3 merit. In 1000 lie gained the following awards: At Ashburton. first and champion; at the International Show, Christchurch, second prize and reserve champion, also first prh:e for best stallion in the walking competition (beating the champion stallion Pride of Newton), and first prize for Lord Rothschild's silver bowl for the best Colonial-bred stallion (Shire or Clydesdale) by an imported sire, thus gaining the highest number of awards at the Show. Lord Erskine was purchased in April, 1007, at a cost of 800 guineas by F. A. Bremer, of Okaiawa, Taranaki, from Mr Robt. Clarke, Itosemeath Stud, Ashburton. The Champion Clydesdale Stallion will serve a strictly limited number—so—c/ approved mare 3 for outside owners for lie ensuing season.
