WHE RE WORKMEN ARE WANTED.
LESSON FOR BRITAIN FROM ' AMERICA. WORK FOR ALL. : iicjcouni of the prosperous conditions prevailing in the North-West of the United States appears in a La Crosse (Winconsin) newspaper. The region can he truthfully described a* the "Aortas' paradise." Wages are high, and Mr Chamberlain's ideal of "two jobs for each man" is practically realised, as tb{ following remarkable extracts show: — '"Men wanted; goodwages pawl." This is a familiar to be found 11 the windows in many of the large factories, and in the coluihii- of the newspapers and other praces where employers.believe they may attract the attention of labor. Probably at no time in tlie history of the city has labor been as scarce as it is at present. When all the men who want to Work are busy in a eonmr.mity :it it th* best inJi:itioi of its p-orro-ily. Such is the coiuitinn of I.a Cross >, and better than that, families are moving to the city, and firms that employ men are seeking help from other tources. All kinds of labor are scarce this sitrn- ■ mer,-iwt only in L» Crosse, but in nil -eit4«-m Ibr-North-West. In this city a large amount of build - ingis going 011, reivers are being laid, water ma,i''s construe!;u street improvement- are going on, railroad work is ir progress, in fact there is sn much work 11 it it is inposs'ije tj get men enough to perform it. Many ot tile local contractor haie several jobs, but they are unable to keep a crew of men at w- rk 011 any i.-ie contract steadily, because they desire to keep each onj moving, and therefore they change the from one to the ether Nearly e»"ery roplraclor cou'u employ twice the rumber of men that he has ; at work at present, but they arc not to ' l>e had. As a result of the scarcity of men wages lu'-e been increase!, and all classes of labor are being well paid. Already adiertisements are beginning j to appear for men to go to the western harvest fields, and it is expected mue'a trouble will be experienced in obtaining sufficient help to harvest the crops. The condition of affairs is not confined only to the North-West All over the United States there is a great demand for labor of all sorts.
