Per Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. The rowirig season was formally opened yesterday afternoon. The weather was beautiful, and a large number of people were present. A procession of boats, launches, etc., was held, after which sprint races were rowed. Auckland, Last Night. The cricket season in Auckland opens next Saturday. The first-general practice was held to-day. The New Zealand lawn tennis championship meeting will be held at New Plymouth this season, and several prominent local players have already arranged to compete. The opening of the rowing season took place this afternoon, when trial fours were rowed under the auspices of the Auckland Rowing Association. Twentyfour crews, representing the various rowing clubs, took part. The bowlers selected to join in the projected visit to Sydney have been asked to discuss the advisability of increasing the number of players to go on the tour. The management, it is understood, has received a dozen or so applications for positions in the combination, and it is considered dpeirab'fl to rescind the resolution previously: carried limiting the number of players to 20. As indicating the interest tlvti has been created in the trip, it may ba ■ mentioned that only two qf. the original 20 players selected have failed to deposit the accessary guarantee of good faith, ■ and these through unforeseen circum- ..A stances having arisen. The arrangements for the North'Island bdwling tournament to bo held in Auckland in January next are well advanced, and a successful meeting is anticipated.
