XJIK CAUU'iIiLD CUP. (By ''Moturoa"). 'ihc Mill Caulileld Cup conies up for. decision to-day. 'Although only fifteen horses are looked upon as certain Blatters the iiold contains such "filers" as Poseidon, True Scot, Apologue, Jolairc, and Welcome Trist, and a stirring con--1 est is likely to ensue. l'oscidon is quoted at 5 to 2, the New Zealnnder Apologue at 4 to 1, and Welcome Trist next at 10 to 1. Favorites have only won tho mile and a-half event on two occasions, Calma scoring away back in 1882, and Poseidon winning last year. The latter must run a good race and Welcome Trist with only 6-t 9lb is given a great chance, but. a victory by Apologue would be bailed with delight right through the Dominion. He is certain to run up well, a; lie is set down to carry 81b less than when he ran Mooltan to a head in the Metropolitan.
TPRF TOriCS. (By " Moturoa ")'. Master Pel aval arrived at R'ccarlon on Kuiii'lnv. Armlet, Count Wilte, Needlework. Merriwai' uml Mahutonga have left Australia, returning heme. Armlet, who was bred by Mr C. (>. is by MenchikofT out of 'Armilla, and ran away with the Gimcraek Slakes, a w.f.ii. event run over four anda-half furlong*, at Randwick list week. Needlework' broke down badly when winning tho Second Hurdles at Sydney.
He hobbled into second place. Signor, who is engaged in tho N.Z. Cup, injured himself last week, and has been turned out.
Two Stewards' Handicap candidates, in Red Gauntlet and Idealist, caught the judge's eye at Dunedin, but both escape penalties. This is Idealist's third [successive victory, and his new owner must bo taking his left band in his right and doing tlio pump-handle business with great vigor! .- p • Downfall and BobrikolT have been scratched for all engagements at tho C.J.C. meeting.
Before leaving Wanganui, Maniapoto put up a dec-en i gallop over two miles, and his condition is greatly improved. A slight appearance of muscle soreness is his only trouble, but this may work on at Wellington. All Red is an unlikely starter in the j Stewards' Handicap. I Ihe Conqueror gelding engaged in the TO!. Cup has been named Vineo. Ho is booked for Wellington and Masterton hack events, but cannot be taken seriously for (he big event at Riecarton. Mahoe has been nominated for" the Auckland Cup. which moms, J suppose, that the Sou'-Wester gelding will not fly the battens for some time to come. Malioe is possessed of a bit of pace and such an undoubted slayer is worthy of respect in tho Auckland race. The old veteran lied Gauntlet'won a race at Dunedm last week.
'I lie following riding ono-a"enients are reported for the New Zealand Clip':Armistice, W. Price; Maliuta. A. OlliverA pa. C. -Tonkins; Elevation, ,T. McCluskv'. Downhill has 7>oon nominated for events at the Auckland Spring Meetiii" so it seems unlikely that ha will contest the New Zealand Cup or Canterbury •lockey ( 111!) Derby.
