ANGLICAN SYNOD.
; • Per Press Association. 'Auckland, Last Night. The business sittings in connection with the Anglican Synod opened ui.i, ;; i lernoun, Bishop JNeligan, J». his address, made a lengthy allusion to the problem of the Church and the masses, stating that out of a population ofi 214,0UU within the Dominion, only U9,189 were "church people." Referring to tho Bible in State schools, 'he said if the absence of 'Bible lessons from State schools were continued long enough, it would force people who cared for education in its only true sense to start and maintain denominational elementary schools, as had the members of 'the Church of Home. He had no doubt that the issue must work oat thus. It might take tweny-five years or more before it happened, but happen it must. Referring to the separate endowed School Bill, he stated if It'became law there would not he a single religious educational insta'tutiott of any, kind in the Dominion free from the interference, captious or otherwise, of the Minister for Education. For the time being, no man, Anglioan, Koman, Presbyterian or Wesleyan, could contribute to religious education acconling to his own form of faith with any degree of security that his gift, direct or testamentary, would not be alienated from the definitely religious education purpose he had in view, because it w«v liable to seizure by the Minister o« Education at any time for purely uvular lmrnosea. He felt sure the people would be determined in .their resistance to any action calculated, as this was, to infringe the principle of religious liberty. The Bishop concluded by announcing his intention o£ visiting the Lambeth Conference next year.
