ALLEGED STREET BETTING
Per Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. James Anderson, a bookmaker, was charged at the Police Court to-day with street betting. The charge was laid under the City Bylaw No. 8. Counsel for the defence .{Ml*. Han Ion) raised the point that the charge that defendant "frequented" a street for the purpose of lietting was not borne out by the fact that he was seen on the street on one •particular day accepting money from someone, ''i'requcnting" meant from day to day. Sub-Inspector Norwood contended that ''frequenting" applied to one. day if tile person charged was seen more than once on the same day or during the whole day in any particular public place, practically as a bookmaker, and urged that there was evidence from de- | fondant's own statement and from tlia police evidence that he was a bookmaker. Mr. C. C. Graham, S.M., reserved his decision on the point raised until Wednesday next, and Mr. Hanlon remarked that he also rested his ease on the fact that, although defendant was seen accepting money, there was no proof that it was for the purpose of betting.
