ARBITRATION COURT.
l'cr Press Association. Auckland, Last NightAt the Aribtr.iiion Court this utternoon, proceedings were taken against \V. Knee .one and J. McLciiuon. on a charge of committing a, breach of the hairdressers' award. Mr Kced, for defendants, stated that in June Kucebune sold out his shop in Symoiids strccL to Lennon, and then bought another place in Queen street. Xhe weekly hall-holi-day was observed by hairdressers in the two streets on dilicrent days, and when Kneebone's liuif-h<.liJ ly arrived he went up and assisted Lennon, who returned the compliment. They merely exchanged labor, ami he submitted that there was no bruieh. -iir Le Cren, in reply, stated that under the Shops and Ullices' Act, anyone who worked for another was an assist int, and should be paid. Mr Reed submitted that the law did not prohibit an employer working on a half-holiday in another shop in exchange for services returned. If it were ruled that one employer could not work for another on.a half-holiday, tli;; matter could still he got over by the one nun paying the other a half-sovereign, or i whatever it might be when he assisted lirni, and the other returning tlic halfsovereign when the service was returned, which reduced the thing to an absurdity. Mr Le Cren said there was another phise of the matter which had ■ to be looked at, and that was that these employers, in exchanging labor, were keeping other men out of work. i The court held that there had been an ; , exchange of labor only, and no breach ■ | had been committed.
