CORRUPTION IN THE LAND OF HUSTLE.
Dr. Morpeth, who lias just returned to the Dominion from a course of study ill the United States of America, related to f-'eilding Star reporter an incident as showing the state of corruption existent in the land of bustle. r l be then /Philadelphia City Council had control of the water-supply and vj-ere desirous of selling this valuable asset to.n private company, their palms, of course, being well greased. The taxpayers, however, objected, so the Council polluted the water-supply, thus causing an epidemic of sickness. The Council were blamed for not being able to safeguard the puolic health, but retaliated l>v quietly informing the public that it they were not satisfied with their control, to allow of the transfer of the water-supply to the aforesaid company. '1 his was agreed Id. flic councillors ga'ned their reward of their : 'gr"aft," and the water-supply was speedily purified. Philadelphia is reckoned to be one of the cleanest of cities, as far as civil government is concerned!
