RACING IN AUSTRALIA. CAULFIELD CUP MEETINGS, Received Ocl. IG, 8.45 p.m. Melbourne, October 1(1. After an afternoon's steady rain yesterday, the Caulfield course was in fine condition, mul there was a large attendance. Results:—

Emo Hurdles.—Red Ely, 10.7, 1; Lyric, 0.7, 2; Mcrrion, 11.1, .1. Seven others ran. Betting: oto 1 against the winner. Time. :!::-.in 51'/ 2 see.

-Mona Nursery Handicap.—Sequent, 7.0, 1; Mother Goose, 7.8, 2; Banguo, 7.0, 3. Fifteen others started. Betting: 7 to 2 against Mother Goose, 7 to 1 Sequent. The winner led all the way, and won by a length and a-quarter. Time, all'/jscc. Eclipse Stakes.—Poseidon 1, May King 2, Lady Dillidoiice 3. Other starters were: Procecdor, Inlaire, Dyed Garment.-, Mazarin. Lady Rylstone, Sarahand. When the Held was leaving the I straight, -Mazarin was in charge, then | Procecdor and Lady Diffidence. Along by the railway side, Poseidon and Lady Diffidence were in the van, and came into the straight in that order, with Inlaire next. Poseidon made no race of it, and won Tiv two lengths from May King, who came with a late run, gaining second place. Mazarin was Time, 2min 23-j'jsee. Betting: Even money Poseidon, y to 1 against lolaire. Hunters' Cup—Grandmaster, 11.2, 1; Kilarney, 10.!), 2; Roscommon Boy, 11.11, 3. Five others ran. Won easily. Time, 7min 33'/isec. Betting: 7 to 1 against the winner. t'oongy Handicap.—Apologue, 9.5, 1; Thackeray, 7.3, 2: Kyeadgerie, 7.5, 3. Other barters: Yabba Gabba, Tulktroo, Fclicita, Dynamite, Rhubarb, Rangatira, Invergordon, Charmant, Moana, •lack Smith, Fidelis. Betting: 4to 1 against Apologue, 5 to 1 Yabba Gabba. At the mile post, the latter led from Invergordon, who suddenly broke down. Thackeray then went to the front, ami led to the home turn, where some humping took place, with the result that Tulkcroo and .lack Simtli fell. Thackeray led well into the straight, but Apologue came on the outside with a. fast run, and catching the leader before the post was reached, won by a, short neck. Time, 2min 24'/tSce.

. THE CUP BETTIXG, Received Oct. 17, 0.5 a.m. Melbourne. October 10. Subterranean burst a. ldood-vesscl in his head while training at Mentone. His trainer says the horse will start in the. Cup. but his chance of victory is not so bright as before the accident. The market is very uneven owing to the uncertainty of a couple of supposed starters and others reported amiss. Apologue was supported for a failamount at 7 to 1 against, and then shortened. Closing prices were 3 to 1 against Poseidon. G to 1 Apologue, 8 to 1 Ebullition and Welcome Trist, 10 to 1 Bendigo, 12 to 1 Ellis, lolaire, and Subterranean.

Moriarty is said to be quickly regaining his old form. The meeting of Gold Crest and Muskerry in the Flying to-day should be interesting.

In the Wellington Handicap, Claiiehattan carries the same weight as he won with last year.
