Bellringcr, chairman of the borough works committee instructing him to be more vigilant in the matter of detecting breaches of the borough by-laws, Mr Kendall wrote to the Council on Monday;—"l have now (material in band for upwards of twenty cases of breaches of the by-laws. ... As the proper working up and hearing of the cases and searching for others will occupy all the time at my disposal, I shall be reluctantly compelled to ask your permission to let all matters stand aside in the meantime, as I should not like to lose my cases." This seems to be work for the nuisance inspector, not for a highly-qualified man like Mr Kendall, whose engineering work should be plnced first, except, perhaps, in the ease of very flagrant breaches of the by-laws which come under his notice. In the Police Court yesterday, before Mr il S. Fitzherfuert, S.M., A. M. Potts appeared on charges of drunkenness, refusing to leave the Taranaki Hotel licensed premises when ordered to do so, and with resisting tile police. Mr T. S. Weston, who appeared for the defence, said the circumstances showed the otfence to be a trivial one. Constable Mcintosh, the arresting policeman, siid the accused had been making a noise in the hotel, and Ihe licensee had had io send for the police. He requested the accused to leave the hotel He refused. He and Constable O'Halloran tried to put him out. He fought, knocking witness over, and they had to put him into a cab by main force. The Magistrate said resisting the police w.n a most serious offence and one for which the accused could he indicted and sent before a jury. On the first charge the accused would be convicted without a fine. Fines of 10s and costs were inflicted for refusing to leave the premises. and 40s and costs for resisting the police.
