COMPANIES PREPARING FOE THE WOBST. London, October 14. The reply of the Railway Companies' Association haa been received by Mi Richard Bell. It confirms tie refusal to confer with the delegates of tie Amalgamated Society of Railway Servant*. I. ' V 'M |<Q Advices from Glasgow state that the Scotch railways resolved in the event of a strike to forthwith accept all the employees' notices. It stated that the placet of the twelve thousand members of the Amalgamated Bociety of Railway Servants wiU be easily filled. ENGINEMEN'S SOCIETY STANDS ALOOF. GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION URGED. Received Oct .15, 950 p.m. London, October 15. Mr Fox, general secretary of the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen, addressing a large meeting of railway men at C 'in'ri.lge, denounced the secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Railway S-rva.nts, Mr Bell's, tactics in indulging in unneeesnry menace anj mad-slinging. He predicted the agitation would be a helpless failure. The enginemen did not want ex-railway guards to represent them, but enginemen when negoti ;ting about the enginemen. - Mr Ramsay Macdonald says if the Conciliation Act and other powers possessed by the Board of Trade are insufficient to prevent a strike, then the Government ought tu summon Parliament in order to strengthen the hands of the Board of Trade, and enable it to act effectively. Mr Bell, interviewed, declared that the olive branch had been held out often enough- "We are now asking the men to strike, and the matter is in their hands."
