Mr. Joseph West, the newly-elected I borough councillor, took his seat at the Borough Council meeting last night. Mr. lien Tillett was a passenger from U ellington by yesterday's mail train, and went on to Auckland by steamer. Councillor Cattley and Mr. .11. Black, borough electrical engineer, were absent last night from the Borough Council meeting, and were granted leave of absence. Mr Justice Sim (President), Messrs (Slater and Brown (members) and Mr Wilson (Registrar) of the Arbitration Court, arrived from south by the mail train last night Mr. \V. J. Pcnn, editor of our local ' contemporary, met with an unfortunate. I 1 accident yesterday morning. He W :ir 1 walking across a paddock which had been ■ I made " slippery by the rain, when he. 1 • slipped and fell heavily, with the result 1 that he broke his left arm. His many friends will wish him a speedy recovery. The late Mr. Bellringer was !• Mayor from 1880 to 18!):!, and councillor i for'two periods from 1870 to 1880, and _, from 1800 to 1001, making a total period " of nineteen years devoted to municipal * service.
