THE AUSTRALIAN TARIFF.
REPORT BY BRITISH COMMISSION. A FAVORABLE REVIEW. BRITISH TRADE LIKELY TO TNCREASE. Received Oct. 14, 9.47 p.m. London, October 11. The Tariff Commission has published an elaborate nmlysis of th.' new Australian tariff. It considers that while the tariff will probably can=e a transference of trade from foreign countries to the United Kingdom, and affect the relative proportions of different branches, British exports to Australia are unlikely to diminish, but may increase the tota'l volume of exports. The report emphasises that under previous tariffs the British share of the Australian import trade steadily diminished, and revision was necessary in the interests of Australian revenue. It is estimated that the value of Australian imports placed on the United Kingdom's free list amounts to at least three millions, and those placed on the general free list to at least seven millions. There still remains, also, a large area of imports to which preference can be applied. 3HB VALUE OF THE PREFERENCE, ALL THAT WAS PROMISED. Ecceived Oct. 14, 11.48 p.rn. London, October U The Morning Post says the Tariff Commission's cold, clear analyst shows that preference gives to the Motherland at least as great an advantage a: the authors of the tariff led ns to expect.
