After Barney's suicide Woolf Joel reius,ed to pay the amount on the ground that nothing had been done to execute the plot, 'the quarrel and the shooting of Woolf ensued. [On March 15. 1593, Frank (or Ludiwig) Mcrtheim, a young man, >hot and killed Woolf Joel. Wertheim demanded * sum of £2500, ana Joel refused to give it to him. It was stated at the trial of Wertheim that he h:d written threatening letters to Joel demanding bribes for the murder of Pres.'.nt Kroger. Apparently the charge against Wertheim now is that he has been using his alleged knowledge of the late Barney Barnato's plot against Kiuger as a means of extorting monev from Jolly Joel.]
