(2.8'/ 4 ). A reference to his breeding ill show him to be a very high-class itallion, and he is related to most of the >est trotters in America. Judge Belden (imp.) was sired by Elmo (1891), time 2.17; first dam, Pren:us, by Niagara, time 2.15, sire of I'airnount, time 2.22, and Fanny Maker, 2.15; g dam of the great American inarc Maud S., time (high-wheeled sulky) 1.8%; Elmo, sire Como, time 2,2G'/ 2j Alfred, sire Como, time 2.21; Elma, sire 2oino, time 2.2-1; T. C. Lee, sire Como, time 2.15. Mohawk (001), the sire of Elmo, time 2.12; was also the sire of Jlark's Mohawk, time 2.25; and in turn the sire of Yellow Dock, time 2.11, and many others with 2.30 records. Judge Belden, sire of Count Belden, was sold with a public trial of 2.17, and was the most handsome stallion that ever left America. At the Royal Agricultural Show, Sydney, N.S.W., he gained First and Champion Prizes three years in sue cession. Judge Belden (imp.) is the sire of Bellman, winner of the Auckland Trot, Canterbury Victoria Handicap, and Pro gressive Handicap in 1808, and the Auckland Electric rot in 1897. Duke C., out of the same dam as Count Belden (imp.), won Epsom Trot of two miles, lime 5.7%; June Handicap and Glasgow Trot, at Auckland. COUNT BELDEN cannot be beaten for getting Carriage Horses and Hackneys of the right stamp, as his size and breeding must prevail in leaving good stock and fast trotters. His sire, Vanity Fair, represents the third generation of a brilliant line of sires, bred by Mr. Burdott Coutts, I wherein the notorious high-stepping Norfolk blood of old Confidence has been hardened and improved in size, bone, and quality by successive crosses of Triffit's Fireaway, the great Yorkshire sire. His dam, Vanity, is by Vigorous (1215 E.H.5.8.) out of Lonely (048 E.H.5.8.). Vigorous is also the grandsire of that celebrated hackney, Hedon Squire (14306), the property of Sir Walter Gilbey, Bart.
