THE FAREWELL.

Farewell! I go—thou know'st not the painFaint echo hears and yet resounds again. My heart with anguish torn—how sad to tell; Yet sadder still to falter, "Fare thee well." Farewell! the lark's lament doth fill the air; Farewell! the hills re-echo everywhere; As music to my soul for ever more will dwell That one sad parting note—the murmur of farewell.

Farewell! the waves respond against the shore, As with a thousand ripples bounding o'er; With laughing play, one moment, short to dwell, Then ling'ring leaves a tear, and sighs "Farewell."

Farewell! the soft winds sigh in accents low As though it fain would stay! yet I must go; The murm'ring tone still thrills the wild blue bell, Who drops her head in token of farewell.

Farewell! tis murmured as the night dews fall, Upon the daisies bed and lillies tall Doth glisten as bright gems—yet tis the knell— The parting of the day—its sad farewell.

Farewell! 1 love thee—yet I cannot stay; Stem duty calls me hence, I must May heaven keep thee—angels round thee dwell; One thought, 'tis all I ask of thecj farewell. Mrs Adolpli Goldwater. New Plymouth.
