LOCAL AND GENERAL.
I Our night staff acknowledges with thanks u well-tilled hamper from Mrs. Dockrill and the ladies of the Star Club social committee last night. A man named John Goold died suddenly at Mrs Fair's private boarding house yesterday morning. The body was removed to the morgue nt the hospital. An inquest will be held to-day. There was a heavy gale during Wednesday night and Thursday, damaging fruit trees and blossoms a good deal. .Several large trees were uprooted, and small limbs were strewn everywhere. Writing to a fellow-angler in New Plymouth, Mr Jack Fleming, who some time back left the local Agricultural Office to join the Wellington ofliec staff states he has had some good sport witl: the rod and Jly in the Wellington rivers His first day's fishing for the seasor resulted in a bag of twelve spottec beauties. Local sports will be pleased tc learn that Mr. Fleming has got intc good fishing country. It was a happy coincidence (says ar exchange) that on Dominion Day a) the geysers in liotonia district mad< specially line displays, the Pohutu caul uron at Whakanuvarewa playing foi fourteen hours, a performance nevei sren before. The Arawa natives liavi decided that the maun of Sir Joscpi Ward was greatly improved by this rc markahh* thermal recognition of the change he was instrumental in effecting. In some parts of Central Otago (says the Dunedin Star) the rainfall is akin l» that of the regions of the White Nik —there is none! In one part of tin Maniototo Plain (timmerburn the drought still holds, and the experiences of sheep-farmers are not delightail. The lambing season is proving unprofitable A-. one farmer pin it, "the ewes that werena deid are looking for a place t: dee." Mr. Singleton, the flovernment cheese export, states that "he found in Toolcystreet, London, that merchants, sore over their losses of last year, are disinclined to contract fur a whole season's butter supplies, but prefer to purehane in London as consignments arrive. New Zealand's best and worst brands are well known all over Tooloy-street, and are spoken of with reference to their characteristics. The cheese of a factory noted for the poor flavor of its produce is known as the cheese with the (the name of the factory) flavor. A good reputation in Tooley-strcet is worth money. There is a readier sale for produce bearing the factory's brand than for unbranded produce. Especially is the brand looked for by the largo retailer who combines New Zealand. Danish, Canadian, and other butters together and retails it under his own brand in a uniform quality. Mr. Singleton does not see any likelihood of New Zealand butter reaching the consumers unmixed. And in any ease lie thinks we should be content so long as the big buyers recognise its value. There is no reason to doubt, however, that the wholesale firms send out the New Zealand packages intact." At the annual meeting of the Jlaketawa Dairy Company on .Monday, jlr. Joseph Simpson moved the following resolution:—"That this meeting of suppliers to the Jlaketawa Co-operative Dairy Factory wish to enter a protest j against flie remark of Mr. Wilford, A1.11.K., re child slavery un the farms of Titranaki, also that other companies in the district be asked to add their support to this motion in an effort lo put an end to the misstatements uttered by men who are in high places and who evidently know little ol tfe Subject." Mr. Simpson said that he noticed that some of the newspapers were at work , again on what they called the child , slavery in Taranaki. He thought that the writers of those remarks should j come up to the district and see these child slaves, and find out for themselves | how very much like slaves they really looked, and he felt sure tile writers would have to admit that the children were much better off and Jess like: slaves than any similar number of city children. It was simply their i'gnora'nce of the position that made them write as | they did, because anyone eonveivant Willi the matter could not write Mich I ab>i,lutcly fal-e statements, and he thought it was their duty to publicly combat those statements when such an occasion as that presented itself Mr. .1. lii'own -lid that he quite agreed with all Hat ilr. .Simpson had said, and had much pleasure in seconding the motion. The resolution was put and carried unanimously.—Record. TWO SOVEREIGN 1 REMEDIES.
