(From Our Own Correspondent!,> RAHOTU. Mr. W. R. Wright, who recently sold his dairy herd in order to go in for sheep, arrived on Tuesday with a iloek of SOU sheep and 700 lambs which lie purchased around Wanganui. .Mr. Wright, ou his trip, drove through most of tlie land around Wanganui, and has returned home more impressed with the quality of our land, which, he says, is lar above the land about Wanganui. Tile llahotu school, which has been closed for the past three weeks, resumed on -Monday last. There are still a large ] number away through sickness. The lvahui-road school closed down 011 -Monday last owing to the prevalence of measles. Air. Dan Anglesca, who met with ail accident to his leg some time ago, is now able to get about on crutches, and we trust it will not tic long before he is able to resume his work. Mr. Jack Ward n/et with a painful accident last Saturday. He was loading firewood on a dray, when some of tho wood came down and crushed his hand against the guard-iron, almost severing two of his lingers. He was taken to Dr. -\lorrison, who dressed the wound. Mr. Gray, Government auditor, is at present on his annual visit to the district, auditing the books of the ParihaKa Road Board. The many friends of Mr. T. Downs, who was manager of the Crown Factory . here, learn with regret of the sad misfortune that has befallen him in the | death of his wife and sons. He has the sympathy of all who knew him here. The cheese factory has advanced another stage, a suitable site having been procured alongside the Pungarere stream. It is intended, if possible, to have lac factory in working order by the new vear. i Tlu- hall committee held a meeting on Monday night. The series of euchre parties showed a credit of £2O lis—ft fact that was due to tlm assiduous manner in which Messrs. il. Phillips and T. Parsons worked. Votes of thanks were accorded them, and also Miss Morgan and Mrs. Leng for gratuitously supplying the music. The recent Social showed a profit of £0 3s. A vote .if thanks was accorded Mrs. Hood for tha trouble she went to over the supper! It is proposed to hold a basket social in aid of the hall on Wednesday next. The new Salvation Army officers, Cap-, tain Trenwith and Lieutenant Matthews, have made themselves popular by the practical manner in which tliey helped during the recent spell of sickness. These lassies were indefatigable in their efforts to assist all and sundry as much as posi 1 sible. They are now eolleoting for tha self-denial fund, and there is no doubt they should be well rewarded, as they have during the past few weeks given a practical instance of the wor(c tha Army does. OPUNAKE. 1 A well-attended meeting was. held on Tuesday night in Mr. Rogers' office toi discuss the advisability of forming aj tennis club. Mr. Knell presided, and stated that this season Mi's. G. W; Rogers .had offered the 1 dub the use of her lawn for four days per week. This
offer was accepted, and it was resolved I to form n tennis club in Opunake. About I
twenty-five names were handed in as members, and the subscription was fixed at 2s (id for ladies and 10s for men. Ollicors were elected as follows:—Presi-
lent, Mr. Knell; vice-president, Mrs. G. tV. Rogers and Mr. Armstrong; seere-,ai-y, Mr. Balfc; treasurer, Mr. Coopi-j bridge; committee, Mrs. Cnssidy, Misses' Hickman, Campbell, and Wagstaff, and' Mr. Duncan; auditor, Mr. G.W. logers. It was decided to have the openingday 011 the first Wednesday in Sovem-' ber. Tlie committee were also instructed, to try anil arrange for a ground for; next season. The s.s. Muritai arrived here on Tuesday and unloaded some cargo. She is expected back about the end of the week. ■Mr. J. R. Stewart held a horse fair Wednesday. Owing to the roughness of the day there was not a very big yarding. Mr. firay, Government auditor, was ill Opunake on his usual visit auditing the books of the various local bodies.
